Peacock in UV:

In this work I wanted to investigate a recent assertion that peahens are tetrachromatic, possessing four independent colour channels for conveying information which extend into the ultraviolet (UV) range (mainly the blues). This would go some way to understanding why a peacock goes to such lengths in growing, maintaining and displaying his magnificent blue plumage.

This photo was taken in 2011 and has been digitally altered to enhance blue ultraviolet wavelengths to give us an insight into what a peahen may see when observing a peacock suitor.

To me this piece is reflective of our arrogance and delusion as a species that we assume that every other creature living on this blue planet is in some way inferior to us. When I see this picture I am reminded of the intrinsic beauty and diversity of nature; a nature which is perfectly balanced and one we are becoming increasingly disconnected from.
